BRG Roto Training
FUNDAMENTALS OF ROTORDYNAMICS FOR END-USERS & MANUFACTURERS
December 4th thru 8th, 2023
Courtyard by Marriott — UVA Medical Center
Charlottesville, VA

BRG's 5-day short course is designed to educate end-users and manufacturers on the basic principles of rotordynamics including lateral and torsional dynamics. The course emphasizes hands-on exercises and real-life case studies rather than equations and higher-level math. With more than 100 years of collective experience in the field of rotordynamics, BRG's training team has a wealth of knowledge applicable to such machinery as:

• Centrifugal & axial flow pumps & compressors   • Turboexpanders
• Steam & gas turbines • Electric motors & generators   • Gearboxes

These machinery types are common in such industries as:
• Power generation • Refining and chemicals • Oil and natural gas
• Aerospace • Defense

The 5-Day short course will include the following subjects, among others:
• Rotor modeling for lateral & torsional dynamics
• Shop & field balancing
• Case histories of oil whirl & shaft whip rotor instabilities
• Labyrinth, honeycomb & hole pattern seal dynamics
• Modeling & testing of pedestal & support dynamics
• Operation, design & application of squeeze film dampers
• Synchronous instability case histories due to Morton effect
• API vibration and rotordynamic specifications
• Fixed geometry & tilting pad bearing operation, design & application case histories
• Dynamics of active magnetic bearings & application case histories
• Compressor oil seal & centrifugal pump wear ring dynamics
• Coupled lateral-torsional vibration & analysis of trains with gearboxes

The team of course instructors has a unique blend of end-user, manufacturer and R&D backgrounds, allowing them to be unusually adept at making complex concepts accessible to personnel with a wide range of education and experience. The team of instructors includes:

  Nathan K. Brown    •    James M. Byrne   •   C. Hunter Cloud   •   Minhui He
  John A. Kocur, Jr.   •    Eric H. Maslen   •   José A. Vázquez
